This week, a handful of people hit the roadsides and ditches across Union Township to pick up litter. Armed only with garbage bags and high-visibility vests, they roamed our part of the county to collect the wrappers, cans, and bottles tossed thoughtlessly from a moving car… as well as those tires, rolls of carpet, and other bulky items that had been more maliciously dumped. My first post for this site is a pictograph from Lake Hegman in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Area. Located in northern Minnesota, many scholars have studied this collage of red ochre paintings, left on the rock by the Ojibway people an estimated 500 to 1,000 years ago (Quetico Superior News). Like any great image or photograph, this image contains a story. Did the artist arrive in one of the three canoes?
